How we’re taking steps to support our employees’ mental health
Published April 19, 2023 by Adam Boulahlib – Head of Delivery
The tech industry is known for being dynamic and fast-moving, and it attracts hard-working and dedicated professionals who are passionate about their work.
Added to that, we work in an agency where high-quality work is delivered within tight deadlines. We fully understand that this can come with pressure, especially during peak periods.
We believe that good mental health is vital in the tech industry, and we are determined to create a work culture that prioritises the well-being of our agency’s team.
With this in mind, here are a number of initiatives that we have recently put in place to support our employees.
Mental Health First Aiders
dotcentric now has three trained Mental Health First Aiders on our team, after Tech Lead Jacob Spencer, Project Manager Sam Smithson and I completed a two-day course by Mental Health First Aid England this spring.
While we are not trained therapists or mental health professionals, we play a crucial role as the first responders in providing listening support to those in need. Our primary function is to signpost relevant mental health services and resources to individuals who may be struggling with mental health issues.
Step challenge
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs from the 15th to 21st of May, we’ll be running a step challenge throughout the month of May to encourage our team to get active.
While walking has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health – and exercise is known to help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and boost self-esteem – a step challenge can help our team build a sense of community. The aim is to foster a supportive and inclusive culture, which is important for mental health awareness and reducing stigma around mental health issues.
The step challenge will also promote physical activity, provide a fun and engaging activity and foster healthy competition.
Mental health workshop
Our Mental Health First Aiders will be leading a workshop to raise awareness and educate employees about mental health issues.
It will provide employees with resources and information about mental health services available to them, such as employee assistance programs or mental health benefits offered by dotcentric.
The workshop will teach employees coping strategies, stress-management techniques, and other self-care practices that can help improve their mental health.
Next steps
Prioritising mental health culture and awareness is essential for creating a supportive and healthy work environment. By taking proactive steps to promote mental health and wellbeing, we can positively impact the lives of our employees and foster a more positive and productive workplace.
As we move forward, let us continue to prioritise mental health and commit to creating a workplace culture that values the wellbeing of all. Together, we can work towards a healthier, happier, and more resilient workforce.
